Elementary Special Educator

Provide individualized instruction and support to students with special needs, to manage the Special Education process and ensure compliance, and support teachers in meeting the special needs of their students within their classroom. The Special Education teacher will work as part of the KIPP Harmony Academy team in order to lead children from low-income communities to climb the mountain to college. The Special Education teacher will report to the Principal and/or Dean of Student Support Services, work closely with the Dean of Instruction for KIPP Baltimore and collaborate with classrooms teachers as part of their grade level team.
Position Responsibilities
Special Education
Direct services (either one-on-one or in a small group setting):
- Coordinate Special Education services for students on case load.
- Provide necessary interventions to small groups of students or individual students.
- Provide in-class support with interventions and re-teaching.
- Support staff in provide in-class interventions to targeted students.
- Support staff so they can administer assessments and interpret data.
- Guiding problem-solving and goal-setting for students receiving Special Education services (academic and behavioral).
· Coordinate beginning, middle, and end of year progress monitoring assessments.
· Coordinate ongoing Friday Skills Assessments.
- Monitoring ongoing data to determine intervention groups, monitor progress of students receiving interventions, and to guide ongoing decision-making (academic and behavioral).
- Giving homework help and problem-solving over the phone when not at school.
Indirect services:
- Conducting classroom observations in order to:
- Provide support and strategies to parents to help their child be successful at home and in school.
- Collaborate with teachers on instructional interventions and behavioral management systems in the classroom to meet students’ needs.
- Provide support and strategies to parents to help their child be successful at home and in school.
- Meeting with teachers and parents to discuss student progress or develop pre-referral interventions through the Student Excellence Team process.
- Working as a part of the multidisciplinary special education team, developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and completing the necessary documentation as outlined in federal and state law.
- Providing required data and goals for IEP creation and ongoing meetings.
- Implement and/or support classroom teachers in implementing accommodations and modifications identified in a student’s IEP.
- Complete IEP report cards and paperwork for compliance.
Communication
- Communicate with parents, students, staff members, and guests in person as well as through letters, phone calls, one-on-one interactions, and whole group presentations.
Qualifications
- Certification in Special Education
- Experience with Maryland IEP Online
- Ability to influence and motivate others
- Ability to persist in the face of challenges
- A deep commitment to, passion for, working with children and families from low-income communities so they can excel academically
- Strong organizational skills: planning ahead, meeting deadlines, and multi-tasking
- Strong critical thinking skills: able to link cause and effect, analyze data, and generate relevant solutions
Hours
- Summer: M-F 7:50 A.M. until 2:50 P.M.
- Regular School Year: M-F 8:20 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.
Salary
Pay scale based on the Baltimore City Public School System salary schedule; plus additional compensation for additional time.
